How to choose and size a lyrical dance costume

Lyrical routines call for costumes that move. This guide covers what to look for, how our sizes work, and how hiring a lyrical costume from us runs from selection to stage.

What makes a good lyrical costume

Lyrical and contemporary choreography is expressive and flowing, so the costume should be too. Look for chiffon or georgette skirts that catch the air on turns and leaps, draped bodices that stretch with the dancer, and soft colours that read well under stage lighting. Avoid anything stiff or heavily boned — it fights the movement rather than finishing it.

For group routines, hiring matching costumes keeps the line clean without the cost of buying outfits each dancer will only wear once.

How our sizes work

Child costumes come in four sizes — Small Child, Intermediate Child, Medium Child and Large Child — and each is cut to the average size for its age range. Adult costumes are sized Small, Medium and Large. Every costume page lists the sizes we hold and how many of each are available for your dates.

If a dancer falls between sizes, choose the larger one for lyrical styles — a flowing skirt forgives a little extra room far better than it forgives a tight bodice.
